IBM Lures a High-Profile Customer From Amazon’s Cloud — According to Business Insider, The Weather Company (parent of the Weather Channel) will be moving its business-to-business unit, WSI, from a private data center to IBM’s SoftLayer. TWC will continue using AWS for its consumer business, although it might migrate some workloads from other businesses over to IBM’s cloud as needed. WSI collects information from more than 2 billion sensors and other data points worldwide to generate more than 26 billion forecasts a day. Feeding this information into analytics platforms like Watson will give customers tools to import weather data so they can plan for storms and other disasters. The widespread discussion surrounding this decision underscores the competitive nature of the cloud services landscape.
