Hackers have the ability to learn a lot more about you through your cell phone than you may realize.
No matter how careful you are with your data on your mobile device, by simply using your cell phone number, hackers can track your location, phone calls and text messages.
In 2014, at a hacker convention in Hamburg, security researcher Karsten Nohl, came out and shared that it doesn’t matter what precautions you are taking – hackers can get into you phone and find what they need, just with the phone number. The hack uses the interchange service, Signalling System No. 7. This service acts as a broker between mobile phone networks, handling details such as number translation, SMS transfer, and billing when calls or texts are made across networks.
So what exactly can a hacker access? By gaining access to the SS7, an attacker can than track a person’s location based on mobile phone mast triangulation, read their sent and received text messages, and log, record and listen into their phones calls – simply by using their phone number as an identifier.
